Attorney General Holder Reveals Aggressive Gun Control In Response to Ft. Hood Terror Attack

Drawing reasonable conclusions from what Holder publicly said, we now know:
Holder wants a national, permanent gun registration system administered by law enforcement. A registration of honest citizens that have cleared the federal background check for gun purchases with those records permanently retained by and shared among law enforcement.
Holder wants new federal authority to prohibit any person on the federal watch list (reported to be 400,000 names) from buying guns and supports confiscating guns from those on the list who possess them.

Here's the "Rub" as my friend would say: No one knows what it takes to get on the terrorist watch list and lots of people are on it due to mistaken identity. You can be put on the list anytime the government wants to take away your rights.
Draw your own conclusions.

Re-upped my membership for the NRA yesterday. Whilst on the phone I inquired as to current membership numbers. They told me they didn't have an exact, but it was just shy of 7 million at the end of last month. 7 million. Last November it was 4 million! What does that say about the mood in the country? They say about 1/2 of all households in America have a gun in them, yet few gun owners are NRA members. I think it says that gun owners are concerned about their rights.

Town Hall Brownshirts?

Recently there's been a lot of press about violent protests and shout-downs at town hall meetings where people can "interact" with their elected representatives. Many people in the Democratic party are saying these are "Astroturf" movements and not grass roots as the people participating are insisting.

Now, since the current administration feels it is under organized assault from it's opposition, who I guess is the American Public, they will now send out AFL-CIO members to balance out the playing field with "counter-protests" at these meetings.

Anyone who has studied history would say this sounds an awful lot like the Brownshirts of Ernst Rohm or the Squadristi of Benito Mussolini that used similar brute tactics during their political careers. There's a term for taking politics violently to the streets and using scare tactics and brute force to persuade people. It's called Fascism.

Fascism is a behavior, not a political system. If political victory is the strategy, then fascism is a tactic.

The things I see lately are disturbing to me, as to many others. I just hope we can reach a peaceful solution and that politics doesn't take to the streets again as it did during the 1960's.

Two Things

First off , I want to talk about the "Cash for Clunkers" program as run by the US Gov. This is probably the most mis-understood thing out there since that woman in Miami thought that after Obama became president she wouldn't have to worry about putting gas in her car or making a mortgage payment.
Most people I've talked to outside the industry are under the assumption that if you have an old car, any old car, you can just trade it in and get a govt handout to help you buy a new one. Wrong. You need to go to the CARS website and run your vehicle thru qualification page. I have two very old vehicles and neither qualify by the way. 18mpg or less as rated by the EPA is the threshold and not many cars get less than that unless they are complete pigs.
Then there's the program itself. Over 100 pages of paperwork, a Govt website that constantly crashes to file it (one clerk claimed 5hrs to process one car) and dealers so worried they might not see the money that some force buyers to sign an agreement that they are responsible for the voucher if the Govt. doesn't fork over the money. Meanwhile the turned in car must be destroyed (seizing of the engine) within two days of filing.
In most cases, people drive clunkers because they can't afford a payment or can't get financed. Perfectly good vehicles, we had a Land Rover the other day, are being destroyed because folks that could afford to purchase a new car are taking advantage of the extra govt bucks to buy a new one. The people driving real clunkers won't be able to pay that loan and are looking at possible re-possesion in 6months or so.
Here's a twist: By taking the clunkers off the market, people that can't afford anything but a clunker will have less to choose from and be denied inexpensive transport. How's that for helping the poor?

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out, through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses. And he kept coming back, 13 more times, and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.. Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died on Wednesday, June 25th, 2009, at the age of 80, in Boise , ID. May God rest his soul.

I couldn't resist posting this. I've been reading "Liberal Fascism" and I highly recommend this book. It discusses the foundations of Fascism from it's roots in Bismarck's Germany thru to today. Turns out Fascism, Socialism, Progressivism, and Liberalism are kindred spirits, sort of like different flavors of the same ice cream. It's a good read and plenty of footnotes with lots of supporting references, not just the ramblings of an author pushing an agenda.

Haven't posted much lately (since april). Haven't had too much to say. Biggest change is the Geocities is discontinuing their web providing service where I have maintained a site since 1999. Ever since I stopped being webmaster for the Boca Raton Bicycle Club, I haven't done much there, so upon hearing about Geocities I decided to blast the pages out and just focus on the blogspot. I will be adding more pictures and the like and maybe some thoughts here and there.
Not much new on the gun front. Politics is still screwy as usual with Sotomayor who can't make up her mind what she stands for or won't say for that matter. My Congressman, Rob Wexler cares more about his blind ambition and support for the people that can return favors he is pushing forward with national health care, even though his constituents are protesting outside his offices. He said in so many words that even though his constituents don't support his views, he knows what's best and he will save us from ourselves. After all, we're just stupid. The guy doesn't even live here, until recently when it became public knowledge, and was using his Mother in laws address in his district while living with his Family full time in Maryland. Scumbag!

Obama Administration Won’t Challenge Ruling on Guns in Parks

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama administration won’t challenge a court ruling that prohibits visitors at some national parks to carry loaded concealed firearms, satisfying gun control groups.
The Interior Department said in a court filing yesterday that it will uphold a U.S. District Judge’s decision to reinstate 26-year-old restrictions on loaded guns in national parks and will conduct a full environmental review of a Bush administration regulation allowing the weapons.
“We are pleased that loaded, concealed guns will continue to be prohibited in our national parks,” said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, in a statement yesterday. “Semiautomatic weapons have no place in the valleys of Yellowstone, on the cliffs of Yosemite, or under the torch of the Statue of Liberty.”
The Bush administration approved an order that allowed visitors to carry firearms in national parks, and the ruling was implemented in January. The National Rifle Association, which backed the order, said it would cut down on crime and could be useful to fend off animal attacks in the parks.
The Brady Campaign along with the National Parks Conservation Association and the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees argued there is little crime in the national parks and the Bush administration’s ruling ruined the family atmosphere.
Lawsuit Filed
Gun control groups filed a lawsuit charging the Bush administration violated several laws when issuing the rule, such as failing to conduct a thorough environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act.
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly granted the antigun plaintiffs an injunction against the implementation of Bush’s rule last month.
“We hope and expect that the Obama administration will conclude that the rule can only make our parks more dangerous and should not be implemented,” Helmke said.
The National Rifle Association filed a separate appeal of Kollar-Kotelly’s judgment and several lawmakers who support gun owners’ rights’ have issued legislation to reinstate Bush’s policy.
“We will not give up our fight in courts to defend the rule change,” said NRA Executive Director Chris Cox in a statement last month after Kollar-Kotelly struck down Bush’s order. “We will pursue every legal avenue to defend the American people’s right of self-defense.”

Reporting from Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and Mexico City -- It was a brazen assault, not just because it targeted the city's police station, but for the choice of weapon: grenades.The Feb. 21 attack on police headquarters in coastal Zihuatanejo, which injured four people, fit a disturbing trend of Mexico's drug wars. Traffickers have escalated their arms race, acquiring military-grade weapons, including hand grenades, grenade launchers, armor-piercing munitions and antitank rockets with firepower far beyond the assault rifles and pistols that have dominated their arsenals.

The Mexican government said it has seized 2,239 grenades in the last two years, in contrast to 59 seized over the previous two years.The enhanced weaponry represents a wide sampling from the international arms bazaar, with grenades and launchers produced by U.S., South Korean, Israeli, Spanish or former Soviet bloc manufacturers. Many had been sold legally to governments, including Mexico's, and then were diverted onto the black market. Some may be sold directly to the traffickers by corrupt elements of national armies, authorities and experts say. You may recall that the New Administration thru the DOD decided to restrict ammunition sales by discontinuing the sale of once used brass to ammunition reloaders. Ga Arms is the 5th larget ammunition manufacturer in the US. This change in regulations (which did not have to go thru the congress) was going to force the price of ammo up by 400% and Ga Arms to lay off half it's work force, approximately 30 people. After the word got out the people of this country bombarded their elected representatives and by Tuesday the order had been rescended. Below is the message on Ga Arms web site:

Word came down that all shells 50 caliber or smaller CAN still be purchased without the mutilation requirement as long as kept in the US.

"Effective immediately DOD Surplus, LLC, will be implementing new requirements for mutilation of fired shell casings. The new DRMS requirement calls for DOD Surplus personnel to witness the mutilation of the property and sign the Certificate of Destruction. Mutilation of the property can be done at the DRMO, if permitted by the Government, or it may be mutilated at a site chosen by the buyer. Mutilation means that the property will be destroyed to the extent prevents its reuse or reconstruction. DOD Surplus personnel will determine when property has been sufficiently mutilated to meet the requirements of the Government. "

This is a huge waste of taxpayer's money. The value of these products is reduced by 80% by going from a recycled product to a scrap product.

I called them today and they where very upset about this. It seems that surplus brass, both used and unused will be crushed rather than put out for bid on the open market. Many ammunition manufacturers use this brass for production and this will severely limit their ability to service the market. Please contact your representative about this. I know I will.

Memo to Employees:
As the CFO of this business that employs 140 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way. Guardsmen to conduct urban training at Arcadia in April The Carroll National Guard unit will train on urban military operations by holding a four-day exercise at Arcadia.The purpose of the April 2-5 drill will be to gather intelligence, then search for and apprehend a suspected weapons dealer, according to Sgt. Mike Kots, readiness NCO for Alpha Company.Citizens, law enforcement, media and other supporters will participate.Troops will spend Thursday, April 2, staging at a forward operations base at Carroll. The next day company leaders will conduct reconnaissance and begin patrolling the streets of Arcadia to identify possible locations of the weapons dealer.The primary phase will be done Saturday, April 4, when convoys will be deployed from Carroll to Arcadia. Pictures of the arms dealer will be shown in Arcadia, and soldiers will go door to door asking if residents have seen the suspect.Soldiers will knock only at households that have agreed to participate in the drill, Kots noted."Once credible intelligence has been gathered," said Kots, "portions of the town will be road-blocked and more in-depth searches of homes and vehicles will be conducted in accordance with the residents' wishes."One of the techniques we use in today's political environment is cordon and knock," Kots explained. One sector of the American economy that is booming with the new administration is the absolute orgy of guns and ammunition sales, although I am certain President Barack Obama won’t say anything about this positive economic news.
I read more than one report of the surge of civilian firepower sales when it appeared that Obama would be elected.
Reason: Freedom lovers do not trust Obama.

His choice of Eric Holder to be attorney general bolsters that distrust.
Like Obama, Holder is a gun-control zealot —typical of the loony, anti-freedom wing of the Democratic Party.
Do not believe the president’s thinly veiled statements about supporting an individual’s right to own guns. Rather, review these men’s previous, career-long, freedom-restricting, gun-grabbing statements.
Holder consistently has supported gun bans and raising the age at which someone can purchase a weapon. He’s supported registration and licensing, waiting periods, and his all-time favorite and the felon’s dream: gun-free zones.

Eric Watson (R-Cleveland) said he will be working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle "to protect the Second Amendment rights of Tennesseans by ensuring that gun owners have certain rights to privacy." His announcement comes on the heels of the publication of every handgun carry permit holder in the state on the Memphis Commercial Appeal's website. In 2007, the Nashville-based Tennessean published the list as well, raising the concern of Second Amendment advocates."As a former law enforcement officer, I have seen the kind of violence that this knowledge can perpetuate," said Rep. Watson. "No one wins when a newspaper publishes the names of handgun carry permit holders. This action puts the permit holders at risk to have their weapons stolen, and it especially puts non-gun owners at risk by giving criminals a list of easy targets who are not armed."

Another View from the Other Side

Just to show you I don't only read pro 2nd amendment propoganda, here's something from the other side. Anyone who says the gun culture exagerates their position can easily see the Brady Campaign and VPA (violence policy center) does the same thing. They prefer to villafy gun ownership and equate it soley with hunting. They fail to see the shooting sports as they exist today. With hunting areas dwindling and urban areas growing, the shooting sports have evolved from people that shoot to put food on the table to people that just enjoy shooting for the fun of it. Be it competition shooting, target shooting, or self defense, these are the new realities. So called Assault weapons (sounds scary) are actually less powerful than other hunting rifles. If someone wants a .50 caliber rifle because they just want it for long distance target shooting, good for them. It's no different than someone that wants to hot rod up a car or motorcycle for the fun of it. People aren't robbing banks with these weapons, they use black market handguns and shotguns for the most part. Most gang bangers can't afford a Barrett .50, and if they could they certainly couldn't afford the ammunition. Below is a story from todays Huffington post. Massachusetts gun laws are not working and need to be reformed.
That's according to James Wallace, Executive Director of the Gun Owners Action League, who spoke at the Jan. 8 meeting of the Berkshire County League of Sportsmen.
In 1998, Chapter 180 of the Acts of 1998, reputed to be the "worst gun laws in the nation", were passed. During the 10 years since passage, there has been an 84 percent drop in licensed gun ownership from 1,500,000 to around 240,000. During the same period, Wallace cited crime statistics which indicated that there was a 67 percent increase in firearm related homicides, 236 percent increase in assault related hospital discharges, 331 percent increase in firearm related Emergency Room visits and 590 percent increase in gun related outpatient observations.
These statistics were provided by the Massachusetts Department of Health.

Eric Holder is a bad idea for Attorney General

President elect Obama has a lot on his plate, which makes the appointees to positions in his administration all that more important. He will not be able to micro-manage his administration. For this reason he cannot have "rogue" department heads that may have their own agendas to push. Eric Holders only qualification for Attorney General is that he was Janet Reno's Assistant AG during the Clinton administration. He has a record of being the point man on the Marc Rich pardon, a man who was in hiding in Switzerland and was dealing with Iran. He blocked the investigations at Waco and Ruby Ridge where Federal Agents under the orders of Janet Reno killed unarmed American citizens. He also was instrumental in sending Ilean Gonzalez back to Cuba and pardoning FALN terrorists in the final hours of the Clinton administration by blocking evidence from being presented. He is just an errand boy for whatever admnistration he works for and disagreed with the recent Supreme Court Decision (9-0) that ruled the right to bear arms is an individual right, and not a collective one. So much he wrote an Amicus Brief to argue his position. Without a babysitter, a guy like this is a bad idea for whatever Civil Rights we have left. The AG has a tremendous power to regulate without the permission of Congress, especially in the days after 9/11.

Love her or hate her, Sarah Palin comments on her treatment by the media during the election. She mentions how Caroline Kennedy is considered qualified for a Senate Appointment when she has no political experience. Also makes comments about how although Barack Obama declared his family off limits, her family was "fair game" for the media. Even though the McCain/Palin campaign was badly run, for the the media to portray Palin as a ditzy woman who just happened to end up as Governor of Alaska was gross exageration. No wonder why so many people now distrust the "New Media" as a propaganda arm of our government.

Keltec !

I didn't start out wanting a Keltec, I just sort of came around to it slowly but surely. It's obvious practicality staring me in the face like having a nail in one hand and then seeing the hammer. But, there it is. That cheesy looking firearm that fills it's role so perfectly that even Ruger had to copy it and call it their "New Fresh Design" that we "Started with a Blank Sheet of paper".

Concealed carry of a firearm presents many challenges. The biggest one of Concealment. I probably had the right idea when I first started out. I purchased a .357 snubnose revolver thinking this would be the Jack of all trades, and to an extent it was. The problem is my climate. I live in a warm climate. Lots of clothing is uncomfortable and also sticks out like a sore thumb in a crowd. Big guns are impractical from the standpoint of everyday activity because it becomes a chore to conceal them. They print, peek out from below shirts when reaching for that top shelf, whatever. Eventually my .357 snub migrated to my pocket. This was finally the answer. Sort of. Try taking 5 rolls of quarters and walking around with them in your pocket all day. It's like carrying around a boat anchor. Your pants sag so you have to cinch up your belt, now you can't breathe, you get the idea. They make Aluminum revolvers. They weigh about a pound loaded. That's better than a pound and a half but not ideal.

So now comes the Keltec. 7oz empty and flat as a wallet. It's like it's not even there. It's lightly built so many people malign it as "cheap", but for what it has to do it's perfectly designed. It can go anywhere and with 6 rounds of .380 is still a viable self defense gun. And it shoots better than you might think. I don't get paid by Keltec to push their product (I would accept any money offered, hint,hint) but you really can't go wrong with this one.

Ammo: Where is it? If you're looking for any of the popular calibers and just started your buying spree, you'll be in for a big surprise. It's hard to find. I went to Walmart friday and there was no .38spl, no .380 and no .22lr. Ok, maybe they haven't gotten a delivery for awhile so I went shopping on the web. All of the major online vendors are sold out. I'm aware there is a lot of panic buying going on, what with the election and all and demand is outstripping supply but this trend is disturbing.
I guess this makes a good case for not locking yourself into one caliber. 9mm is not in short supply, so I guess I'll be shooting more of that and sitting on what .38 I have until things loosen up.
Well, shoot straight, shoot often, and remember: Safety First.

I love the '48

No, not the .48 caliber, the 48th chainring. I like riding in the "Big Ring" but I find the standard road bike 53th to be very limiting unless you're a full-on racing stud. It allows you to use all the gears on your bike, and if you're using the standard 39th inner ring it's not that big of a jump from one ring to the other. Problem is most bikes come standard with the 53/39 setup, so if you are in the market for a new bike or just getting old like me and tired of trying to push that 53, or tired of all that "Chain Rub" from the front derailleur, give it a try.
